Lynch: Week 2

I decided to use David Lynch’s Eraserhead as a vague inspiration for this week’s submission. This is my first experience shooting at night. It is also my first real attempt at creating a “scene.” Dolls are something that have terrified me for my entire life, and working with them did not ease that fear one bit. Horror is one of my favorite genres though, so I tried to make these photos look as unnerving as I could. The editing process was a great deal of fun, because I ended up getting a crash-course in some Lightroom tools I’ve never used before. The photos of the Pumpkin Pilgrim were just a weird little departure I wanted to try. I found him at Savers and thought he just looked so odd. One of the things I like most about Lynch’s style (and elevated horror in general) is the use of open space. I tried to make this especially apparent in the photos of Boo.

While I am happy with my final products, I feel as though I fell a bit short of my original intent. Some of the photos featuring Boo came out a little bit brighter than I thought they would. There were also a few setups that didn’t pan out as well as I had hoped. They were my attempt at using low light and reflections. My goal is to use what I learned on those failed arrangements down the road, so at least it wasn’t for nothing.

All props acquired at Goodwill and Savers.

  1. Wow George another successful series. I particularly like the ones of the lone doll with lots of space surrounding her in the nighttime lighting. They do overlook a surreal feeling of alienation and disassociation. There's so much to learn by looking at the work of someone else first. It helps prepare our minds for how we will approach the subject. Working with setups like this is actually the most difficult kind of photography to do. It certainly is a huge step up from photo 1 requirements. Keep going!
